Palatka is a city located in Putnam County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,033. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 10,796. It is the county seat of Putnam County.
Palatka is located at 29°38'52"N, 81°39'5"W (29.647731, -81.651259).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.5 km2 (7.5 mi2). 18.0 km2 (7.0 mi2) of it is land and 1.5 km2 (0.6 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 7.70% water.
The bridge shown in this article is the new, current Memorial Bridge. The view is from Palatka, looking east toward East Palatka. The Old Memorial Bridge (a nearly-level bascule-type drawbridge) was demolished in the mid-1970s. Four statues of WWI doughboys and a sailor stood on either side of the lift-span of the old bridge. They were removed and placed at either end of the new bridge at the riverbank.
It is of note that the sailor statue, when approaching the bridge from the western side, appears to be holding a huge phallus. This is actually an artillery shell he is holding in the area of his waist. The Model, James Myles Dixon of Daytona beach, has said that it was the most flattering representation since the film "An Officer and a gentleman." As of the census of 2004, there are 10,796 people, 3,880 households, and 2,421 families residing in the city. The population density is 556.6/km2 (1,442.1/mi2). There are 4,318 housing units at an average density of 239.5/km2 (620.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 48.93% White, 48.43% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,880 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.0% are married couples living together, 24.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.10.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $18,129, and the median income for a family is $26,076. Males have a median income of $27,716 versus $19,187 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,351. 33.1% of the population and 27.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 41.0% of those under the age of 18 and 19.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
